Plot Summary
A middle-aged woman stands in her living room looking at the box as it whispers and hums a Polish phrase, "Zjem twoje serce," which means "I will eat your heart". She tries to destroy the box with a hammer, but she is attacked by an unseen force that throws her around the room and leaves her unconscious on the floor. Her son arrives and finds her in this state.
Basketball coach Clyde Brenek and his wife Stephanie are divorced and have two daughters: teenage Hannah and 10-year-old Emily "Em". Em discovers the box at a yard sale and becomes obsessed with it. She opens it and finds a tooth, a dead moth, a wooden figurine, and a ring, which she starts to wear. Em's behavior becomes increasingly disturbing and violent, as she isolates herself from her family and friends. She also develops strange symptoms, such as moths flying out of her mouth, bleeding eyes, and bruises on her body.
Clyde realizes that something is wrong with Em and tries to help her, but Stephanie and her boyfriend Brett do not believe him and accuse him of abusing Em. Clyde researches the box online and learns that it is a dybbuk box, which contains a restless spirit that can possess humans. He contacts a professor who tells him that the only way to get rid of the dybbuk is to seal the box with wax and bury it in consecrated ground. Clyde also meets a Hasidic rabbi named Tzadok, who agrees to perform an exorcism on Em.
Clyde takes Em to Tzadok's synagogue, where they attempt to expel the dybbuk from her body. However, the dybbuk proves to be too powerful and escapes with Em in a car. Clyde and Tzadok chase after them and manage to stop the car before it crashes into a truck. They find Em unconscious in the back seat, holding the box. Tzadok recites a prayer over the box and seals it with wax. He then tells Clyde to bury the box as far away as possible.
Clyde reunites with Stephanie and Hannah at the hospital, where Em wakes up and seems to be normal again. They hug each other and leave together as a happy family. However, as they drive away, the camera pans to the back of their car, where the box is seen lying on the floor, still whispering ominously.
Review
The Possession is a decent horror film that delivers some scares and suspense, but also suffers from some clichés and predictability. The film is well-acted by the cast, especially Natasha Calis as Em, who portrays the possessed girl with convincing creepiness and intensity. The film also has some impressive visual effects and sound design that create a disturbing atmosphere and enhance the horror scenes. The film's premise is intriguing and based on a real-life story that adds some authenticity and mystery to the plot.
However, the film also has some flaws that prevent it from being more original and memorable. The film relies too much on jump scares and loud noises that become repetitive and lose their impact. The film also borrows many elements from other horror films, such as The Exorcist, The Ring, and The Omen, that make it feel derivative and familiar. The film's ending is also disappointing and leaves the audience with a sense of dissatisfaction and frustration. The film does not explore the history and mythology of the dybbuk box enough and leaves many questions unanswered.
Overall, The Possession is a watchable horror film that has some good moments and performances, but also fails to deliver a fresh and satisfying story. It is not a bad film, but it is not a great one either. It is a film that you can enjoy once, but not remember for long.
